Herbicides (from armor. herba — a grass and caedo — I kill) — the chemicals applied to destruction of vegetation. On nature of action on plants are divided into herbicides of continuous action, the killing all species of plants, and the herbicides of selective (selective) action striking one species of plants and not damaging others. The first apply to destruction of vegetation around industrial facilities, on forest cuttings down, airfields, iron and highways, under high-voltage power lines, in drainage channels, ponds and lakes; the second — for protection of cultural plants against weeds (chemical weeding).

Herbicides were used also for fight against hemp plantations (the culture which is used for receiving marijuana) and cooks. Such division is conditional as in most cases the same substance depending on concentration, consumption rates and conditions of application can prove as herbicide of continuous or selective action. For example, monuron and a diloss in doses of 1,2 — 1,6 kg of active ingredient on 1 hectare destroy one-year weeds in crops of a cotton, in higher doses — all vegetation. Some herbicides, for example 2,4-dichlorphenoxyacetum acid, in small doses are growth factors of plants.
